Based in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Philip A. Araman is Research Project Leader for the Southeastern Experiment Station, U.S. Forest Service. He first presented this data during last year’s HMA Production University in Madison, Wis. The results are based on a cooperative research study with Earl Kline, Ph. D., assistant professor, and Carmen Regalado, research associate, both of Virginia Tech. ●

Optimum edging and trimming of hardwood lumber

Before the adoption of an automated system for optimizing edging and trimming in hardwood mills, the performance of present manual systems must be evaluated to provide a basis for comparison. A study was made in which lumber values recovered in actual hardwood operations were compared to the output of a computer-based procedure for edging and trimming optimization. The optimization procedure wa...

Real-Time Value Optimization of Edging and Trimming Operations for Rough, Green Hardwood Lumber

For edging/trimming operations in hardwood sawmills, an operator examines both sides—or just the waney-edged side—of each board, and makes a quick assessment of grade potential. The operator then decides where to edge and/or trim the board to achieve the intended grade and, presumably, maximum value. However, human operators can only achieve lumber values that are 62-78% of optimal. To achieve ...

Value of defect information in automated hardwood edger and trimmer systems

Due to the limited capability of board defect scanners, not all defect information required to make the best edging and trimming decision can be scanned for use in an automated system. The objective of the study presented in this paper was to evaluate the lumber value obtainable from edging and trimming optimization using varying levels of defect information as input. In an earlier study (5), a...

Automatic Scanning of Rough Hardwood Lumber for Edging and Trimming

Scanning of unplaned, green hardwood lumber has received relatively little attention in the research community. This has been due in part to the difficulty of clearly imaging fresh-cut boards whose fibrous surfaces mask many wood features. Nevertheless, it is important to improve lumber processing early in the manufacturing stream because much wood material is needlessly edged and trimmed away ...

A Prototype Scanning System for Optimal Edging and Trimming of Rough Hardwood Lumber

This paper is concerned with scanning and assessment of hardwood lumber early in the manufacturing process. Scanning operations that take place immediately after the headrig have significantly greater potential to reduce loss and improve economic value, as compared to scanning that is performed during subsequent manufacturing steps. In spite of this, the scanning of green, unplaned lumber has r...
